Top Tips for Returning to Skiing After an Absence

People drift away from skiing for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they are inexplicably drawn back to the sport after a long period of time and find themselves wanting to return to the sport they once loved. If you are one of these people, here are some helpful tips to help you get ready for your grand return to the slopes.

Prepare Your Body

You are not as young as you once were and you need to treat your body as such. If you were an avid skier before, you may have some muscle memory locked away but you cannot rely that it will spring back as soon you need it to.

Spend some time in the gym at least one week before you are due to head to the slopes. You can train your muscles up again to respond how you will need them to behave while skiing.

You must also prepare an aftercare plan. Once, you might have been able to kickback with nothing but a beer and a good night’s sleep to prepare you for the next day. Now you might need a little more TLC. Prepare for your muscles to ache in a way they never used to!

Hire, Don’t Buy

Ski equipment has come a long way in the last 20 years and a lot of it may be unfamiliar to you. For your first season, hire your equipment instead of buying all new. This will allow you to get a feel for different new skis and find a style you like without having to fund a payout for expensive equipment you may end up hating.

Take a Lesson

Anybody who used to hurl themselves down a black run may baulk at the idea of investing in a few lessons before a return to skiing. However, a few ski lessons could straighten out your technique and help you a much better ski session than if you tried to fumble through on your own. Many companies like Alltracks Ski Courses offer different types of ski courses which can be customised for your needs. Don’t let your pride get in the way of a successful and happy return to skiing.

Start Easy

Again, if you used to be a pro, taking it easy might seem like a hard pill to swallow. However, it is extremely important for anyone returning to skiing to take a few sessions to build up their confidence and technique again. Taking it easy for one season could have fantastic benefits for you. In no time at all, you will have returned to your previous skill level.

Have Fun!

Most importantly, you must remember to have fun! Some anxiety is to be expected, naturally, but that will be eliminated as soon as you are feeling confident again. No matter why or how long ago you left skiing, you can always return and rediscover the sport that you loved so much. The mountains are always waiting for you!
